The Open Hearts Language Academy (OHLA) group of schools has been providing exceptional ESL programs and language services for over 16 years. Their New York school, situated in the heart of Manhattan, has modern facilities, highly experienced teachers and a long-standing reputation for quality.

The OHLA-Manhattan campus is located in the DeVry University building in Midtown, one block east of the Empire State Building in the thriving business district of New York.

The school offers spacious classrooms, a large research and information centre and well-equipped computer lab. It is easily accessed by all major New York metro lines and attracts students from all over the world looking to study English while experiencing life
in the world’s most exciting city.

OHLA-Manhattan offers a wide range of courses including:

Students at OHLA-Manhattan can choose to follow courses from between 10 to 35 lessons per week and classes are taught in small groups of around 12 students (max 15) with a diverse mix of nationalities. OHLA-Manhattan students are housed in one of
two off-campus residences or through the OHLA’s Homestay programme.

OHLA-Manhattan also offers an extensive social programme to encourage students to interact with their peers and staff members in English.

Group-led activities are offered three times a week and at weekends and include visits to the Empire State Building, walking tours of New York’s neighbourhoods, Broadway shows and visits to Staten Island. The school’s student services team is on hand to arrange airport transfers, provide pre and post-arrival orientation and deal with day-to-day problems.

OHLA is committed to a ‘continuous learning strategy’ and all their schools have an ‘English Only’ policy, which means that English must be spoken at all times as soon as students cross the threshold.

This policy promotes intensive English language practice and helps students to learn quickly.

The school provides high-quality academic and English language programs as well as a cultural experience for people who wish to learn English as a second language for academic, professional and personal purposes.

OHLA uses a skills-based curriculum, focused specifically on developing necessary linguistic skills in five major areas: Reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar. The school offers a wide range of activities to promote language-learning as well as modern facilities and excellent library and research resources.

To encourage students to practice their English outside of the classroom, OHLA-Manhattan provides a program of interesting and rewarding social activities.

Teachers:

All of OHLA-Manhattan’s teachers are qualified English language instructors based in the US who come from a variety of professional backgrounds. Each teacher has completed at least a Bachelor Degree in Second Language teaching or in a related field as well as additional ESL qualifications.

Type of courses

OHLA-Manhattan offers a number of General English courses which focus on developing linguistic skills in speaking, reading, writing, listening and grammar. The
OHLA General Language Course curriculum emphasizes learning language in a ‘natural’ way, rather than through memorizing lists of words.

Therefore students learn English through speaking and listening activities, role play, class discussion and a number of specialised courses tailored towards the students’ interests and areas of need (intensive and super intensive courses only). Courses are open to all levels (from pre-basic up to Elite, the level required for university entrance) and are taught in blocks of 12 weeks. Students’ language levels are continuously assessed so they can be moved up to the next level.

General Languages Courses at OHLA-Manhattan include:

1. Semi-Intensive - 20 Lessons per week
2. Semi-Intensive + Exam preparation (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge) - 35 lessons per week.
3. Intensive - 24 lessons per week which include two elective courses (see below)
4. Super-intensive - 28 lessons per week which include four elective courses (see below).
5. One-to-one - 10 lessons per week

Specialised elective courses (Intensive and Super Intensive English only) include:

OHLA New York offers an exam preparation course for students who wish to gain an IELTS qualification. The program aims to prepare students for the exam through combining intensive tuition in academic language with more general English to improve grammar, vocabulary and communication. IELTS is an internationally recognised qualification accepted by universities and employers worldwide.

● Includes 2 lessons of instruction in small groups, 1 lesson of one-to-one lab work and weekly exam practice (every Friday)
● Can be combined with the Semi-Intensive general English course

OHLA-Manhattan offer two student residences, which are more suitable for independent students who do not wish to stay in Homestay accommodation. Residence 1: OHLA Manhattan Residence This residence is in a desirable area of Manhattan, close to stores and restaurants. It is close to Central Park, as well as to the Metropolitan and Guggenheim Museums. This residence was constructed in the 1970s, and has had extensive remodeling and upgrades over the last few years. The building is also used as a residence by several colleges in Manhattan, and therefore has a great student atmosphere. The lofts feature wood floors, high ceilings, and even a balcony in every apartment. The minimum booking period is four weeks. Make your home in Brooklyn Heights, a short walk from Cadman Plaza Park and the thrift shops and chain stores on Montague Street. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon sunbathing in Brooklyn Bridge Park, and stroll along Brooklyn Heights Promenade to take in the gorgeous views across the river to Manhattan’s skyscrapers. Then, walk downtown to take advantage of the eclectic range of eateries on offer.
