The Republic of Malta is a small archipelago of islands located in the Mediterranean Sea, between Sicily and the North African Coast. The country is made up of a chain of three islands (Malta, Gozo and Comino) covering just 122 square miles and has a population of 450,000 people. Malta has been ruled by the Romans, Moors, French and British, among others, who have all left the islands with a rich cultural, historical and architectural legacy. The official languages of Malta are Maltese (an Italian-influenced language) and English, making it an ideal destination for those students who wish to study English in a year-round warm climate. There is no shortage of things to do in Malta, from swimming and snorkeling in the Mediterranean Sea to sampling the country’s vibrant bars and restaurants. Students can also take an island cruise or tour some of Malta’s important historical sites such as the stunning Auberge De Castille in the capital of Valletta. The English Language Academy is situated in the major tourism centre of Sliema, which offers fast-paced nightlife, excellent shopping and a beautiful coastline. The small size of the Maltese islands makes getting around easy, there is an excellent bus network and plenty of cycle lanes for those who want to get out and about by bicycle. For a tempo and scene change from Malta itself, students can hop to the smaller sister islands of Gozo and Camino, where you can find less crowded beaches and a laid-back atmosphere.
