The English Language Centre group was established in 1991 and now has schools in five countries, on three continents. The EC group have helped over 40,000 students from all over the world achieve their goal of speaking English fluently. Their San Francisco school is situated in the heart of this exciting city and lives up to EC’s global reputation for quality and success.

EC San Francisco offer a Homestay programme, where students live with an American host and their family. This interaction with a family helps students communicate and practice their English in a more relaxed environment whilst also exposing them to new experiences.

Most homes are single family or two-family homes and students are placed in a single or twin room.

Host families are located either in the city limits of San Francisco or in the adjacent towns of Daly City and South San Francisco.

Some of the typical neighbourhoods where host families live are: Bernal Heights, Glen Park, Inner and Outer Richmond, Inner and Outer Sunset, St. Francis Wood, Excelsior, Castro and Mission.

Courses

With 21 schools around the world, EC schools have a reputation for excellence in teaching English.

All EC group schools follow a "Communicative Method" syllabus, which works to develop all four English language skills - reading, writing, speaking and listening.

To give an engaging and relevant framework for learning these skills, each lesson focuses on a specific topic, which varies from current affairs to everyday issues.

The EC San Francisco team of professional and friendly teachers select topics that create interest, discussion and debate in the class. Students engage with the language, learning about other classmates and different cultures around the world, all within an English context. As well as taking an active part in classroom discussions, students work on their language skills in small groups, pairs or individually on tasks and projects.

Classes are taught in a maximum of 15 (average 12) students and active participation from each student is encouraged.

EC San Francisco is dedicated to improving fluency in English through fast-paced and fun lessons that immerse the student in the language. There is also a varied social programme to help students practice their English outside the classroom.

During your time at EC San Francisco, you will be supported by a team of two teachers who will work together to assess your needs and monitor your progress.

All teachers are qualified, mother tongue English speakers. Students receive continuous one-to-one feedback with their teacher throughout each course, where they can discuss their progress and any areas for improvement.

At the beginning of each course, students are tested for language ability using the Oxford Online Placement Test (prior to arrival) or EC San Francisco’s own test (on arrival) to assess language ability.

There are nine levels, from Beginner to Proficient, and students are placed in classes according to their place on the scale. EC San
Francisco also has a Progress Planner which helps students plan their route to fluency.

The EC San Francisco courses all carry the EC Guarantee, which means that if students do not progress at the rate expected, they will receive additional lessons to help them reach their goals, at no extra charge.

Student Welfare As well as teaching staff: EC San Francisco has a welfare team who provide full support to students as well as a varied social program. The team help with accommodation, airport transfers, transport and other personal issues during your time at the school.
