London is a favourite destination for many people who visit England. Many students choose to study at EC London, because it is such a diverse and welcoming city. The majority of students who learn English at the school are from Brazil, Korea and France. The minimum age of those who attend is 16 years and upwards.

The school has been helping students learn and improve their English language skills since 1969. Situated in a large building next to Euston station the location makes it easy for students to travel around London. They have the capacity for a maximum of 336 students. There are 22 classrooms complete with interactive whiteboards. Class sizes are usually between 11 and 14 students. Accessibility is important to the school so they ensure that all students, including wheelchair uses, can get around easily.

There are 16 internet connected computers and free Wi-Fi access is available throughout the centre. Students have the use of a library as well as a self-study room. They can borrow books and DVDs to help with their studies.

A café is on the premises, serving snacks and a range of international meals. There are also reasonably priced light snacks. A favourite place where students like to hang out is the breakout area, which has a large cinema screen.

Courses

All the teachers are qualified and experienced in teaching English to non-native speakers. They strive to make students proficient in English by helping them to grasps the four key area of the language, reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The aim is for students to learn the English language as quickly as possible, and use it in the right context. Students are engaged in each lesson as much as possible to help them learn quickly. The classes often include topics of debate, where students have to communicate with each other in English. All of the activities created helps to make learning fun.

Teachers aim to motivate students and give them the confidence to take an active role in each lesson. If students have strengths the teachers will actively try to improve on them. And if they have weaknesses, the teachers will work hard to improve their skills and encourage them to become confident learners.

A range of learning aids are used in all of the classes. These can be newspapers, CDs, internet and videos. This helps students to understand how English is used in everyday settings by native speakers. Each day there are activities which student are encouraged to take part in, to enhance their experience of learning English. They can meet in the common room to get to know their fellow students.

There are additional workshops which focus on different aspects of the English language. These sessions are adapted to the students’ linguistic needs and is for any student who wants to take part. Students are encouraged to do homework. They will receive feedback and be able to get a sense of how they are progressing through the course.

Students will also have help with their thinking time, so that they can respond quicker in English. Students with different levels of English language skills, find this course useful. Some students want to speak and write better English, to improve their chances of studying at university. Or simply to use it effectively in day to day situations. Other students may lack confidence in their language skills. This course will engage them in a positive way and make them more confident speakers.

This course offers students more exposure to English and they can expect to improve faster. They will be taught fluency and accuracy. The course has set areas that must be studied, but students can choose an option that covers the areas where they need to improve the most. That way student make the best use of their time whilst studying. They can look more closely at grammar and the way the English language is constructed. They can choose to focus on academic skills and how to write presentations. Or they can concentrate on just improving their language skills.

Students who want to gain a competitive edge in the business world take this course. They are assessed before they start to determine their level of English, and then join a class with other students who are on the same level. Each student receives a Language Portfolio and a study tool that is unique to their needs.Students will have regular one-to-one meetings with their tutor, to make sure they are as fluent in English as they can be. Throughout the course they will be continuously assessed to monitor their progress.

Lessons focus on corporate situations where they build their confidence in business settings. They learn how to communicate with business clients and colleagues. By the end of the course, the aim is for students to become fluent in the language of international business. They will find out about professional
business relationships, and how to interact with business clients from anywhere in the world. They will understand how to communicate effectively with emails and letters.

EC London offer exam preparation courses including IELTS and TOEFL. Students may take them to improve their prospects at work, to gain entry into higher education, or for their own personal sense of achievement. Some of the lessons concentrate on the core skills taught throughout the school, speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will learn skills and techniques they can use in exams, by practicing with sample papers. They should be confident in their ability to do what is expected of them, by their exam date. Studying at a higher level, means that students need to know how to ‘skim read’ to pick out important points quickly. They will also need to know how to paraphrase passages of text. All these study techniques are taught.

EC London is conveniently located close to Euston tube and train station. This makes it easy to travel in and around London. There is a lot to see, and students may never get to see it all in their time at the school. When students first arrive they meet with the teachers and their fellow students in the centre’s café. On occasions, this meet and greet will be organised at another venue. There is a breakfast club for students in the EC café every morning except Monday. Students also have the opportunity to have coffee and a chat with the teachers. This is an informal meeting, but students can use the time to discuss any concerns they may have about their progress. Other activities organised by the school include a picnic when students can enjoy food and more conversation in English. One of the teachers also organises football matches for further interaction between students. It is also a good opportunity for students to improve their language skills. Excursions to different parts of the country are also organised. Five of the most frequently visited places are Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Madame Tussauds and St. Pauls Cathedral. There are also visits to the British Museum, The Tower of London or Students can take a ride on the London Eye.
